Mad Max director George Miller has reassured fans the next installment in the film franchise is not in jeopardy despite heavy rainfall in Australia delaying the project until 2012.

The fourth movie in the series, Mad Max: Fury Road, is a remake of Mel Gibson's original 1979 action picture, with British actor Tom Hardy taking on the lead role.

Film bosses chose the outback town of Broken Hill for shooting because of its baron landscapes, but unusually high rainfall last year turned the desert setting into a "wonderful flower garden".

Filming has been pushed back until early 2012, sparking fears the movie may never happen - but Miller insists studio bosses and cast members are all committed to the venture.

He tells Sydney's Daily Telegraph, "We've built the vehicles. We've designed the movie. The principal cast is locked in. The film is funded. It's all ready to go. We just wait.

"All the contracts are signed. It's a locked-in film. It has been for 18 months now. We will restart pre-production later this year and begin early next year - weather permitting."

Charlize Theron and Nicholas Hoult also star in the movie.

Filming on Mad Max: Fury Road has already been subject to delays. The six-month $100 million shoot was meant to kick off August 2010 with stars Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron in New South Wales, before the start date was revised to February of next year. The production has been pushed back again, this time a full year to February 2012.

Even worse, The Australian [via /Film] reports that “the high Australian dollar could ultimately kill the film as its budget grows.” The first delay was for meteorological reasons, but the report doesn’t specify the nature of this postponement. Things are not looking good for Mad Max: Fury Road. George Miller’s fourth Mad Max adventure has hit another road block – meaning that the film won’t start filming until 2012, at the earliest.

It’s the second delay for the film (which is scheduled for back-to-back shooting with a sequel, Furiosa) in recent months and there are reports that the reboot might even be scrapped – as the price of the Australian dollar rises.

The action adventure film, which is currently set to star Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, was postponed in July because an unexpected amount of rain left proposed shooting locations too green for George Miller’s vision of a post apocalyptic world. Pre-production has already started on the film with millions spent – some rumors even state that some stunt work has already been filmed.

However, the crew have now been told that filming will not begin until February 2012.

Last we heard, production was delayed on George Miller's upcoming "Mad Max" flick, "Fury Road". The sort-of reboot/sort-of sequel stars Tom Hardy as the titular badass. He's joined by a growing cast that already includes Zoe Kravitz, Teresa Palmer, Adelaide Clemens, Charlize Theron and Nicholas Hoult. Now, The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Riley Keough is in talks to join the cast as one of the Five Wives, a group of women (Kravitz, Palmer and Clemens being three of them) whom Hardy's Max must protect. Keough, who debuted last year playing Marie Currie in the Kristen Stewart/Dakota Fanning-starring Runaways biopic "The Runaways", also happens to be the granddaughter of Elvis Presley.

It's great to see the cast filling out. THR also reports that production should get going again "early next year." So good news all around for fans of dystopian future-worlds.
